In California domestic workers will be entitled to overtime pay for working more than nine hours in a day, or 45 hours in a week, under a new law signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The bill takes effect in January 2014 and will run until January 2017 unless legislators renew the bill.

The ruling covers as many as 200,000 nannies, cooks, cleaners, housekeepers and other domestic workers - with the exception of babysitters.

Brown vetoed a broader measure last year that also required rest periods, meal breaks and appropriate sleeping quarters for live-in employees.
