Definition single for income tax purpose
You are single if:
  • on the last day of the tax year, you are unmarried or legally separated from your spouse under a divorce or separate maintenance decree.
  • you are a widow(er) before January 1 of this tax year and did not remarry before  the end of this tax year. However, you might consider to use another filing status that gives lower tax rates: head of household or qualifying widow(er) with dependent child.
