You have to pay federal income tax and on top of that state income tax in most states. Some states do not impose income taxes. These 7 states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Two states - New Hampshire and Tennessee - limit their state income taxes to dividends and interest income only. In addition some states allow cities and/or counties to impose income taxes on top of federal and state income taxes. Examples are New York City and Miami.
