- Often requires a massage therapy education program accredited by state boards or the Department of Education.
- Required to take national certification exam for therapeutic massage and bodywork.
- Exam covers six major areas: (1) general knowledge of bodily
systems; (2) detailed knowledge of anatomy; (3) physiology and
kinesiology; (4) pathology; (5) therapeutic massage assessment; (6)
therapeutic massage application and professional standards, ethics ,
business and legal practices.
- Massage Therapy Licenses must be renewed every 4 years.
- Therapists must perform at least 200 hours of therapeutic massage during this 4 year period and should also have completed 48 credit hours of continuing education completed.
- Employment is expected to increase through 2014
- Therapists that have formal training and have take the national certification exam are more likely to have very good job opportunities.
- Referrals and networking are very important and will increase job opportunities.
